In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, only a handful of formally Communist states are left in the world. Moreover, most of these survivors, such as Cuba and North Korea, have the derelict appearance of societies left stranded by the tides of history. Their systems can no longer credibly claim to be on the vanguard of anything, and their political establishments appear all too likely to unravel in succession crises, a process perhaps already underway in North Korea, and hanging over any prospects of a post-Castro Communist Cuba.
